Tunnel vision is a term used to denote degradation of the visual field. It results in a characteristic constricted, circular, tunnel-like field of vision in which peripheral vision is reduced, but central vision is retained.
Tunnel vision can be caused by a number of different factors that may result in permanent or temporary loss of peripheral vision.
Factors causing permanent vision loss include:
- glaucoma.
- retinitis pigmentosa.
- tumor of the pituitary gland stalk (can improve to some degree if the tumor is successfully removed or shrunk).
Factors causing temporary or recoverable vision loss include:
- cataracts (temporary if corrected).
- alcohol use.
- use of hallucinogenic drugs.
- hypovolemia (blood loss).
- migraine (throughout the aura phase).
- intense anger, fear, or distress.
